Writing Success Doesn't Come Overnight

By Ron Wilson

A career in writing is never an overnight success. To be truly good at your craft it takes around one decade of continuous practice. Even for those who are lucky enough to succeed early in their career, they are not at the peak of their ability, and the pressure on them to continue to succeed is immense.

Choosing a profession as an author could be very lonely, and often extremely unrewarding. By developing a supporting environment, you might minimize some of that loneliness and get in touch with individuals who share similar way of livings. Joining courses, online forums and online writing teams could give you the support team you might need to survive the trying times.

Attempt not to be discouraged by the succees of others, and question why they have actually succeeded, when you have not. There are a great deal of elements that determine one's success, and if you have not yet prospered, it does not imply you do not have the skill or the ability. By encouraging others, and role modelling them, you place yourself on a higher plane of success for yourself.

Anybody who has ever really succeeded has failed lots of times prior to their success. No one prospers on their first time, and the biggest successes are frequently those who have actually failed the most times but have stuck with it, and learned from their blunders. For the creative writer, rejection letters are a part of day-to-day life, and you can not let them discourage you, or turn you off your writing.

You cannot please all of the people all of the time. Writing is a unique expression of your individuality, and something that may appeal to some people, while other people dislike it. Always seek more than one opinion on your work, as what one person rejects all together, another person may not be able to get enough of. Your writing will find its own audience.

Just remember that writing is a job like any other. There will always be people at all ends of the scale, some who are successful and others who struggle away for years before making any progress. Try not to expect too much too soon, and you will eventually progress to where you want to be.
