Give Your Novel a Solid Structure

By Ron Wilson

The first thing to consider when writing your story is to start strong. Your first chapter, page, sentence, has to be fantastic. It has to reel your audience in and convince them to continue reading your story.

If you fail to start strongly, you will lose the reader's interest right from the beginning, and they will wonder what the rest of the story holds. First impressions last, and this is truer than ever when a reader picks up a novel and decides whether they should read it or not.

As you write, you need to let your creativity flow, and get out the thoughts in your head. Because of this, you must be opened to change. Don't be afraid to change your structure or revise your plot. Nothing is set in stone in the first draft, and if you feel that something needs to change, change it! It will be worth the effort in the long run.

When you have your structure, or outline in place, it makes the rest of the writing much easier. Surprisingly, it can even give you more space to unleash your creativity and imagination. Because you know what is going to happen next, and how and when it will happen, you are able to experiment and play around with the ideas to a greater extent, and this makes for a deeper story.

Be happy about using a structured framework. Don't feel that it is restrictive or holding you back, because as we have said you can change it as you go along, and it serves as a guideline to get your story onto the page, step by step.

This is a process that many beginning writers need to help their writing develop in the early stages. It boost their confidence and helps to break down the huge task of writing an entire novel, into more manageable tasks.
