Few Examples Of Intelligent Sea Life Which Have Been Observed

By George Hall

Humans are considered to be the most intelligent among the animals of the whole world due to them possessing different abilities. They are capable in doing mental activities which other creatures could not though researchers believe there are some that have more intelligence compared to what was believed initially. These are observed usually on the closest cousins that humans have which are the apes.

They based this information on the DNA researchers found on them having similarities with humans and their behavior is also similar with people. Land animals have an easily observable intelligence but intelligent sea life are there also which scientists have observed. Knowing until where their capabilities reach is difficult since their environment is underwater and individuals cannot visit them always.

Continuous development for modern technology enables the observation of these sea creatures which were impossible before. They could set some cameras and surveillance devices up to help record the daily habits, reactions and activities of creatures like these. Others are capable even of using tools like those Tusk fishes using rocks in cracking the shell open.

Another example is the octopus capable of solving advance problems, mimicking others, spreading cultural information and finding its way in a maze. Other types pick coconut halves even that were discarded by villagers and carry them and wait for prey by hiding underneath. Two shells usually are used to let them see through between the small opening.

Another example of sea creatures having intelligence are dolphins where they are seen with sponges worn on their noses while catching fishes at rocky areas. Doing so protects their nose when chasing their prey in those rocky environment to prevent it from injuries. Several captive dolphins were painted with markings on a body part they could not see for a test and they were found trying to see it in the mirror.

Researchers have also documented recently some dolphins helping fishermen during the fall seasons in a particular place. They heard schools of fish towards the local fishermen wading their nets in the water then they signal to the fishermen that the fishes are near by slapping the water. These actions that are cooperating with humans are described as advanced social learning.

Intelligence of killer whales manifest by cooperating to get their prey like the sleeping seal at a floating ice. Then the first whale who has seen it calls the others and they form a line facing away with their tails to the seal then create waves by beating their tails. These waves would wash the floating ice over and will send the seal to the water where they can kill it.

Whales have recently been known for their elaborate form of cultural exchange and communication in addition to their intelligence known before. New mating songs each year are composed by the male Humpback whales and popular ones spread gradually to other oceans. This was observed many times during the observation period of ten years.

Knowing other creatures are intelligent too is fascinating specially while observing them do these. This information may help people understand and care for them better. Preserve their environment to preserve them as well.
