By Jose Baker

When it comes to short stories some can be fun to read while others can be more fun to listen to. The latter is the case when it comes to Selected Shorts, short stories anecdotes musings which can be found on a number of public broadcast stations in the United States. In fact, after 30 years on the air, it remains one of the most popular radio shows of its kind.

The series is recorded live on Broadway at the Porter Square Theater at Symphony Space in New York City. Like the radio program, the live show is extremely popular with almost every show sold out well in advance of show date. While considered one of the premiere series in which reading plays a part, the associated podcasts also rates highly on iTunes and public radio.

One reason the show is so popular is due to the diversity of themes on which stories are based each week. In most cases, the themes tie into personal and political affiliations. Most recently, women's roles in which Margaret Atwood throws out comedic politically right corrections during a performance of "There Was Once, " currently available on public radio stations around the United States.

While the Selected Shorts stage has been graced by the likes of Kathleen Turner, Ellen Burstyn, Michael Shannon, Michael C. Hall, Claire Danes, Jane Curtain, Zachary Quinto, Paul Giamatti, Anika Noni Rose, Sigourney Weaver, Holly Hunter, Blythe Danner, Josh Radnor, Joan Allen, BD Wong and Maggie Gyllenhaal, there have also been numerous others perform and read these stories on stage.

For those who can get to the Porter Theater in New York City, seeing the show live can also be an incredible experience. Still, having the ability to listen to shows live on the radio or on demand can also provide for a great deal entertainment any time day or night.

Like radio, films can also be a great outlet for telling stories, short or otherwise. While this is the case, most students in a theater arts program will have to create at least one short film during a college career. In one case, Humboldt State University hosts a film festival each semester in which these student films are selected and played at the Arcata Theater, the oldest operating theater in the country.

Whether looking to make or watch short films, it can often be a fun though involved process. In some cases, these films are produced as student films by college students as part of a theater arts program. Whereas, others are made by independent artists whom then submit films to various contests and festivals such as Sundance or South By Southwest.

Whether listening to stories over the air waves, watching on film or involved in the creation of a film, individuals can often have an enjoyable and rewarding experience. If interested in listening to Selected Shorts, there is often a weekly broadcast in different areas. Whereas, if looking to watch pre-recorded shows, ON DEMAND listings can be found on the KERA and other public broadcasting network's websites.
