New Age Philosophies And Their Origins

By Andrea Davidson

A person can only understand new age philosophies through knowing the roots of contemporary cosmic humanist movements. It is the romantic poets of the 19th century like Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson who rejected teaching of the bible and God. They instead wrote lengthy explanations on inspiring spirituality that can only be experienced by personal introspection.

The writing by these poets did not attract attention until the 1960s. Some of those who contributed to this included film stars, eastern gurus and popular music artists, who made the new age ideas public across the world. Most recently, popular musicians like Madonna have joined the Hinduism religion, with other embracing Zen Hinduism openly, like Phil Jackson. Tom Cruise, John Travolta as well as other well known film stars have shown belief in Scientology.

This has resulted in Cosmic Humanist ideas being widely disseminated through television, movies and remarkable book sales. New Age Philosophy does not recognize naturalistic philosophies as well as materialistic ones since such explanations fail to accept the supreme supernatural. If their perspective is correct and assuming all aspects of human existence is sacred, then all things in this world have a spiritual nature.

If lifes spiritual aspects lead to inner truth and higher consciousness, then human beings should view all reality from a supernatural angle. It is this perspective that directs Cosmic humanists to a non-naturalism philosophy, meaning that everything is supernatural and nothing is natural. Cosmic humanisms philosophy opinion is that ultimate real life exists in the spiritual angle.

Cosmic humanists are of the opinion that all reality is God, from the nine planets to the smallest particle. This belief is reflected by their philosophy by focusing on principles which have been put forward by scientists that views the planet earth and the universe as a whole as a living organism.

New age philosophies of non-naturalism affect both their ontology and epistemology. In terms of the theory of knowledge, supporters of the New Age Movement put emphasis on the importance of humans getting in touch with their higher self. By getting in touch with God-forces within, humans can intuitively know truth with no limits.

By looking within, humans will definitely find the truth, with the difference appearing in that it is not how a majority of them understand. If cosmic humans are to be believed, the truth is something that is felt or experienced, and consists of what a human can know. Lifes meaning is not found in knowledge. There is a principle that says if something sounds like the truth, most probably it is. All knowledge is within God-force in people, and forming a connection with the force can enable them tap into such knowledge.

The ontology of the supporters of cosmic humanism branches a certain philosophy that is not naturalistic. The ultimate reality or substance is in the hands of Christ consciousness or God-force. God happens to be the core of existence, with all living things revolving around him. So many of the new age philosophies are monistic, the likes of Marxism, Leninism and secular-based humanism.
