College and You - A few Ideas

By Jean Woods

If you are just starting college and university I really hope the following suggestions will help you out.

Try not to get into a romantic relationship. I understand that this may seem ridiculous, but some studies have shown that students tend to lose their concentration when they have relationship with the opposite sex. This may be challenging, but if you absolutely have to be in an intimate relationship with someone, you should make a deal with that man or woman that you will help each other finish college faster.

Don't be afraid to take therapy sessions. Let's say that you've broken up with your girlfriend/boyfriend, or you simply have an insomnia. Don't hesitate to visit the counseling center. There is absolutely nothing to be upset of.

Do not hurry through the pages of a textbook, hoping that you will somehow miraculously learn them. Some people tend to aim for a certain number of pages every day. It is more important you understand the information.

When you're reading, don't get sidetracked by other external stuff. This implies that no TV should be on, and you should not be chit-chatting with your friends either.

Review your studying materials on a regular basis. You should not study in panic mode, ever. That's the reason it is very important to establish this habit right from the beginning. Strive to take an hour or two every day to review the notes that you've written in your notebook and to check out the next chapter. Trust me, this will spare you a lot of stress.

Constantly take notes. Don't write every little thing down; note only things that are important and that can create a big picture in your mind when you do your studying from the notebook. This can take a few months to understand, but once you learn the skill of writing important stuff down, your class work will become a piece of cake for you. It took me 3 years to recognize that; do not make the very same mistake.

Try to be involved in every single course.

The first reason I'm telling you this is that the professor will remember you. This is especially crucial in college systems where you have to go through written, as well as oral exams.

The 2nd factor is that you must always avoid being confused, even when it makes you feel stupid to ask simple questions in front of other individual. You shouldn't be anxious to ask any question to settle your confusion.
