Information About When The Grid Goes Down

By Cynthia Wilson

A product of fragile human hands such as the grid is bound to breakdown. It cannot last for an eternity. Neither can it function seamless for decades. Definitely, there will be times of interruptions because of either human error or natural factors. Planning for when the grid goes down is a great step. It will help a family to survive terrible days without electricity. One needs to write down his plan and subsequently implement everything jotted down. With the right measures, survival is possible.

Electricity is life. It powers homes, businesses and industries. The primary supply of electricity is the power grid that also supplies water and natural gas. This critical infrastructure is guarded and monitored round the clock. This does not mean that it is out of harm's way. Anything can happen and cause entire cities and states not to have electricity. There is also the possibility of a national blackout.

Failure has occurred in the past. This is the main justification for stipulating future failure. What happened in the past can happen in the future especially if the hard lessons were not learned. Human beings are prone to repeating the same mistakes over and over. Some electric transmission lines are old and worn out. They need urgent repairs. The funding towards this infrastructure is insufficient.

In most cases of power failure, the forces of nature are to blame. Hurricanes usually bring down series of power lines. The destructive nature of strong winds is well documented. Natural phenomena is beyond the scope of humans. The much that men can do is to put in place sufficient emergency preparedness measures. This will facilitate survival during bleak times.

There is also the possibility of hacking. With much of the infrastructure depending on computer systems, a hacker can temporarily or permanently bring down the electricity system. This prospect cannot be ruled out because of the rising number of hackers who are bent on evil. Their goal is paralyze entire organizations and nations. One should live with this in mind.

To survive involves more than just the body. It is also a mental affair. Preparation is key to survival. There are some supplies that are must haves. One of them is an emergency heating source. If one leaves in a cold climate, the house will have to be heated whether or not there is an emergency. One needs good kerosene heater.

A food crisis will set in after some weeks of a blackout. Food production depends on electricity. Therefore, a national outage will have undesirable consequences. Food distribution, transportation and refrigeration also largely depend on electricity. Off the grid refrigeration facilitated by propane will come in handy. One should stack away sufficient emergency food supplies. Of crucial importance is dry and canned food products.

One should expect the unexpected. Disaster can strike at any moment. A total grid failure is a reality that can happen one day. A wise person will not see take this issue lightly but will instead make the necessary preparations. When there is no electricity, some survival skills will come in handy. There will also be need to have particular supplies.
