Notable Survivalist Story Of Aron Ralston

By Walter Campbell

During year 2003, a guy named Aron Lee Ralston had a painful accident in Utah and the event was even the inspiration to one of the notable movies released in 2010 called 127 Hours starring James Franco. For five challenging days, a boulder made him unable to escape the Blue John Canyon which led him to have an idea of escaping by amputating the right arm using a very dull pocketknife. He still managed to live even when the thought of it is hard to imagine.

Before that incident, the man was already known as a motivational speaker, engineer, and outdoorsman. He has been known to enjoy climbing mountains, specifically those that reach fourteen thousand feet in Colorado, and even canyoneering which led him to the incident. For more detailed information about what happened, let us discuss more about the notable survivalist story of Aron Ralston.

It was exactly April 26, 2003 which he hiked by himself only the Blue John Canyon at the eastern Wayne County, Utah. By the time he reached the slot canyon, a boulder suddenly dislodged and smashed his right hand. He got stuck and no help came for him because he did not inform anyone that he hiked.

The man almost lost hope for spending five days in there while slowly consuming his remaining water that was not even enough and he only had about two burritos while trying to free his arm. In the third day, he got dehydrated and planned to cut his arm for escape. With the use of tourniquets, he experimented to amputate his forearm for practice.

On day four, it crossed in his mind to finally do an amputation deep within his bones and he disregarded the fact that he had the worst tools for use. He also forced his self in saving the urine he excretes only to drink it later especially on day five when there was already nothing to eat and drink. He brought a videotape so he used that for bidding goodbyes to the whole family and also managed to carve on walls that indicated his name, date of birth, or assumed date of death.

He only had the two inch knife in engaging the cutting session by himself. Due to the carvings, the knife became even duller than before. Out of desperation, he withstood it in the long run.

He went back to the vehicle but there was no sign of a phone and he had to continue walking under the heat of sun while being injured. There were three people on a family vacation in sight. They even offered some Oreos and water while waiting for the authorities to arrive and help the man.

He thought he would bleed to death already since he lost about forty pounds. However, there were rescuers already when he had gone missing and flew using a helicopter. In fact, he was only rescued after six hours that the arm was cut.

When asked about what would have happened if he just waited for rescue, he replied that he would be found dead. Moreover, it would take thirteen men to remove the boulder. With his arm cremated, he scattered the ashes back where they belong.
