Handmade Wood Pens Make Great Collectibles

By Dianne Crane

Mankind has always been in need of communication between individuals. There are many theories interpreting different forms of communication between people, but applying pigment to a surface has always worked. The first humans drew cave paintings in their dwellings, some of which still exist today. As human beings began growing more articulate over the ages, people have required more need for writing instruments. When the first form of paper was invented artists and writers began using quills, large feathers, filled with pigment in order to apply that ink to paper in a detailed manner. Writing tools have since become an art form and crafters started making handmade wood pens.

These instruments can be as inexpensive as a bottle of water or even cost as much as their weight in gold. There are so many different crafters in this field of work who all use different styles and techniques. Some people collect writing instruments as a hobby. Older models of wooden composing tools exist that are not in production anymore that have become rarities.

These wooden devices are normally crafted from different types of wood depending on the value of the writing tool. On the higher end, harder woods like cherry and oak will be used in the crafting process to make the pen more durable. Sometimes if the crafter is going for a more valuable product, they will normally apply intricate designs or expensive materials such as ivory or gold.

Most of the cheaper models of wooden composing tools will not be replaceable; however there are inexpensive ones that are replaceable. On the higher end buyers may find anything from fountain ink pens to replaceable ballpoint models. It mostly depends on personal preference when shopping through the different models. The ballpoint pen is always as reliable as the replacement held inside. This can be good because if there are ever any problems, a new replacement ballpoint refill will usually do the trick.

There are also fountain ink writing tools as an alternative to the ballpoint type models. These versions of wooden inscription recorders are very fancy and suck up ink of the writers choosing and require no interchanging of parts. These models make fantastic gifts as well because they are out of the ordinary.

The consumer base for this market normally consists of people associated with writing in one form or another. This means people who write for a living or as a hobby. Many people collect these devices because they are all unique and different with varying values and rarity. Although mostly all writers of today write their work on computers, it is always nice to be able to do things the old fashioned way.

People who write are not the only client base for this type of item however. Writing tools like these make wonderful gifts for any type of intellectual person that would appreciate things like this. Types of people who would enjoy this gift could be anyone from a business person to an engineer or college student.

Any writer that does not have a few handmade wood pens should attain at least one. They all have a different balance to them because the wood is always different within. This makes it a very personal gift and would never be forgotten by the person who is receiving. Any intellectual type of individual will appreciate this gift. It will also always make a great collectible.
